This research work is designed to examine the roles of audio-visual materials on the academic performance of student with particular reference to Kogi State Polytechnic library, Lokoja. The objectives of the study is to know the various ways of improving the academic performance of students with audio-visual material, to ascertain whether the library is having audio-visual materials, to identity the problems or challenges facing the audio-visual materials and how to over come these problems. The questionnaire was the instrument used for gathering of data, thirty three (33) copies of questionnaire were administered but thirty (30) copies were retrieved and used for the study. The data gathered from the copies of the questionnaire collected were analyzed using frequency tables and percentages. The Kogi State Polytechnic library is faced with the following challenges, lack of adequate funding to purchase the audio-visual materials, lack of adequate power supply, lack of subject specialist as well as few numbers of professional staff e.t.c. The staff that responded to the questionnaire identified some ways in which the problems can be overcomed, these include: provision of adequate fund by the government more professional staff should be employed and proper audio-visual management should be practiced to guide the acquisition and selection personnel e.t.c.
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Audio-visual materials include information which is not in a book form. They are resource which forms all integral part of the library collection. Especially in academic libraries.
Audio-visual materials according to library glossary (1987) are non book materials like tapes, slides, films which are renewed and recent to rather than read as books.
Dike (1993) defines Audio-visual materials as those materials which do no depend solely upon reading to convey meaning and prevent information through the sense of hearing.
Audio-visual materials have become important tools in academic libraries for educational growth due to the information overload experienced in this era.
Libraries Audio-visual materials such as projectors, micro fiche, audio CD, E-Book e.t.c are very useful because of the opportunities they present in saving space.
Audio-visual materials as it is known for usage to supply adequate background for undergraduates, it also support the research requirements of post graduate students and academic staff.
That is why the researcher has chosen to investigate it main aim in the academic performance of students in Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja.
According to Moses (2015) academic libraries are libraries that support teaching, learning and research are highly imperative to academic activities.
Library glossary (1994) posited that academic libraries are those of the university, polytechnics, colleges and all other institution forming part of or associated with institution of higher learning. In any academic library, students are the users and they need enough information in any form.
They need current and relevant information on the course they offer or study so that they can have a comprehensive knowledge of their field of study.
Hence, the roles of audio-visual materials has become a critical issue to be addressed in academic libraries. If the reasons behind their creation and acquisition are not to be defeated. It is against this backdrop that this project will analyze the roles of audio-visual materials on the academic performance of the students at Kogi State Polytechnic library, Lokoja.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS
In order to provide a wide range of information for users,
academic libraries here acquire audio-visual materials to supplement the printed material they already possess.
However, the proliferations off those materials have presented another problem of how to organize and then roles on the academic performance of users at the Kogi State Polytechnic library.
1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The project is set out to carry out the following objectives
i. To highlight the obstacles against the effective use of audio-visual materials in academic libraries.
ii. To review the roles of audio-visual materials in students academic performance.
iii. To examine the factors that influences the use of audio-visual materials.
iv. To analyze types of audio-visual materials in the academic libraries.
1.4 RESEARCH QUESTION
This project will consider the following research questions:
i. What are the obstacles against the effective use off audio-visual materials in academic libraries?
ii. What are the benefits and uses of audio-visual materials?
iii. Is audio-visual material adequate in Kogi State Polytechnic library?
iv. Is Kogi state Polytechnic audio-visual material effective for student performance?
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The project is significant in the following ways:
i. It is going to be added to the literature in the field of study.
ii. It will serve to introduce the way of using audio-visual materials.
iii. It will serve as teaching aid for lecturer and students where necessary.
iv. It will promote the use of audio-visual materials.
v. It will assist the management on how to organize the audio-visual materials.
1.6 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This research work is aimed at covering the roles of audio visual materials on the academic performance of students in Kogi State Polytechnic library Lokoja. audio-visual materials has contributed hugely to the aspect of making learning easier. Also, it makes direct support to the teaching programmes.
It equally aids wide education and information needs of its entire member whether undergraduate, post graduate students, academic technical and administrative staff of Kogi State Polytechnic library.
1.7 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
The study aims to cover the issues relating to the role of audio-visual materials on the academic performance of students of Kogi State Polytechnic library, Lokoja. Time and financial constraint has affected the accurate data collection during the period of the research.
