1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
It is commonly observed that student’s indiscipline in our schools in Nigeria is fast becoming a problem that is swiftly degrading the education sector and if lasting and corrective solutions are not sought in recent times it might lead to the ruin of the sector. Secondary school students in the last couple of years hardly see reasons why they should take their primary duty serious. They portray lackadaisical attitude to their academic work without any regrets or possible consequences. Students don’t put enthusiasm and extra effort to studies; they come late to school on a daily basis. They trivialize the importance of time which they say waits for nobody while disregarding what might have been missed or lost within the time they are not in school. Secondary school students don’t abide by school rules and regulations and this attitude if not well taken care of might lead to a habit which often results in to lawlessness. Their indiscipline these days is getting more serious because students now steal themselves. There are always cases of missing money, biro, books etc within the class which definitely would have been stolen by one of them. The social menace of smoking in the larger society has found its ways into our secondary schools of recent, because students now smoke heavily. Excessive smoking even within the premises of the school among teenagers who are not supposed to indulge in such act is an eye shore.
One other major act indiscipline among students in a school environment is noise making. Students from the inception of nature have tendency and characteristics of shouting unnecessary on the top of their voice. Students at every opportunity when less occupied by a teacher or an instructor or when any of them are even around during a lesson unnecessary shout on top of their voices even when they can just need to speak calmly. They scream at every opportunity even when at a meeting with the school management or teachers. There screaming are fear laden as it has possibility of prompting more screaming and shouting from different directions from other students. A meeting is an avenue to hear out different opinion from students by the school management but student seizes opportunity of that to scream unreasonably to raise tension when they disagree over an issue. Students lack decorum as a result of indiscipline. The character, style and a good taste of decorum that is appropriate at a specific occasion is always found wanting at the needed time from students and its environment due to indiscipline. They portray unruly behavior to constituted authorities and in some instances there are a group of notorious gangs that specialize in awaking consciousness of other students to make noise in other to disturb the environment.
It is observed that the characteristics and attribute s of discipline exhibited by students towards their teachers is so rude and negative. They disrespect their teachers by not maintaining decorum when the teacher is in class. They use indecent words when describing their teachers , students even threaten to fight or bully their class captains when he/she utter statement that they don’t seems agree with. Students from experience looks down on their school authorities, they don’t accord them due respect they deserve. They refer to their principal and other school management with insultive nicknames that shouldn’t be used to describe people with such caliber and educational status . Observations reveals that students shout at constituted authorities on the assembly ground when they are try to give them advice that will better their lots. They scream in mockery when consent is required from them to know if the principal or any other official is saying is well understood. Students in the past from experience try to fight their teacher or other school officials who might have punished or corrected them earlier in school so they retaliate on them after school or even during school hours. Students’ bully their teachers and others when they meet them on a Path that is less busy and often passed by people. Discussion with students shows that students have given each of their teachers and other school authority different insultive names i.e. Agama lizard, Mumu and so on. They use words that immoral when they want to talk about them.
The indiscipline among students is gradually metamorphosing into truancy. There is constant lateness to school by student which later mutate into irregular school attendance which is mostly common in public secondary schools due to decadence in the schools. when they don’t get to school before the stipulated time they then find a way out to engage in other social vices. Students absent themselves from school without permission or any good reason. They tend to prefer playing football around the school environment or even at the back of classrooms where teachers cannot see them when lessons are ongoing. They leave home on the pretence of going to school and there after go to the cinema. They are equipped with information of the latest movies showing and time to watch them. Mostly from foreign movies they watch, students loiter around the school environment and gamble. They bet among themselves by playing cards and dice or they latest form of sport betting and baba ijebu .The record of school attendance of recalcitrant students are low, they tell different lies of been sick when teachers inquire from them why they miss such amount of school days.
In addition, the lack of indiscipline in our schools in recent times is fighting among students. Students fight and quarrel at every little disagreement which ought to be settled amicably, they quarrel over decisions needed to be taken among them which mostly lead to serious fight. Students scuffle and engage in fracas over policies taken by school management, teachers and other constituted authorities when the policies are not in line with their expectations. Policies are course of actions of programs adopted or made by the government as it relates to the improvement of the school, students are likely to disagree with most forgetting that the management of the school have experience and are very witty so they can hardly take decisions that are bad. Disagreement is normal but needs to controlled and curtailed when it arises. Students disagree and fight without limits due to youthful experience. There is no way everyone will have the same opinion or think the same way so it is permitted for students to disagree but fighting is what students result to fight at any slight disagreements. In recent times, gang groups are increasing in number among students. These groups have different ideas, views and reasons why they were set up. Tier conflicting values are majorly the reasons why they fight. They also fight for supremacy over each other and also try to exhibit territory and dominance within the school. Another common cause of fighting among students from experience is participation in sporting activities such as football and basketball, athletics etc. they fight and disagree due to officiating or use of machineries during or after the game. This indiscipline is so dishearten because it often lead to death, serious injury, disturbances and destruction of public properties.
